Oh, That My People Would Listen to Me
To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. Of Asaph.
1
1
Sing aloud to God our strength;
2
shout for joy to the God of Jacob!
2
Raise a song; sound
3
the tambourine,
4
the sweet lyre with
5
the harp.
3
Blow the trumpet at
6
the new moon, at the full moon, on our feast day.
4
For it is a statute for Israel, a rule
a
of the God of Jacob.
5
He made it
7
a decree in
8
Joseph when he
9
went out over
b
the land of Egypt.
10
I hear a language
11
I had not known:
6
"I
12
relieved your
c
shoulder of
13
the burden; your hands were freed from the basket.
7
In distress you
14
called, and I delivered you; I
15
answered you in the secret place of thunder; I
16
tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah
8
17
Hear, O my people, while I admonish you! O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
9
There shall be no
18
strange god among you; you shall not bow down to a
19
foreign god.
10
20
I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
21
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
11
"But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel
22
would not submit to me.
12
So I
23
gave them over to their
24
stubborn hearts, to follow their own
25
counsels.
13
26
Oh, that my people would listen to me, that Israel would
27
walk in my ways!
14
I would soon subdue their enemies and
28
turn my hand against their foes.
15
Those who hate the LORD would
29
cringe toward him, and their fate would last forever.
16
But he would feed you
d
with
30
the finest of the wheat, and with
31
honey from the rock I would satisfy you."
